About me

Gala Lillian Glotzbach, born in 2001 in Berlin, studies painting at the Weissensee Academy of Art in Berlin.

With both Caribbean and German roots, she constantly moves between two worlds. Her works therefore often deal with the question of belonging. It appears as though her paintings serve as a visual dialogue, capturing the essence of her multifaceted identity and the complexities of her journey. Today Gala draws inspiration from both the landscapes of Trinidad and Tobago and the skyscrapers in her hometowns of Frankfurt am Main and Berlin.

While doing so, the artist uncovers a fascination with the portrayal of suburban dystopia, as well as employing techniques such as scraping off paint and reapplying layers. Techniques that add depth and complexity to her artistic expression.

As she grows up, Gala notices that women of color are rarely seen bare-skinned. Driven by a desire to challenge this norm, she additionally aspires to capture and celebrate the beauty of the female body of color, also in moments of vulnerability. This emphasis naturally caused her work to intertwine with broader discussions on not only identity but also delving into the realms of sexuality and sex work.
